How Does Education Affect Labor Market Outcomes: The Effect of Schooling on Cognitive and Non-Cognitive Skills
نویسندگان
چکیده
We study the effect of a compulsory education reform that increased the compulsory level of schooling by two years on the development of cognitive and noncognitive skills and its subsequent impact on long-term labor market performance. We link individual data on cognitive and non-cognitive test scores before and after reform exposure, reform treatment, and labor market outcomes. This allows us to trace the channels through which education affects socio-economic outcomes later in life. The reform was implemented by Swedish municipalities in a staggered manner during the 1950s and 1960s. We first show that the reform had a significant impact on the development of cognitive and non-cognitive abilities of young men during their teens. However, the effects on cognitive and non-cognitive skills accrue to boys coming from different parts of the socio-economic distribution. Finally, we show that the gains in skills due to the reform are reflected in long-term labor market outcomes. The Effects of Personality Traits on Adult Labor Market Outcomes: Evidence from Siblings While large literatures have shown that cognitive ability and schooling increases employment and wages, an emerging literature examines the importance of so-called “non-cognitive skills” in producing labor market outcomes. However, this smaller literature has not typically used causal methods in estimating ...

Multidimensional Human Capital, Wages and Endogenous Employment Status in Ghana Previous studies of labor market outcomes such as employment and wages have mostly been limited to investigating the impact of formal schooling only and, as a consequence, have seldom considered skills or alternative routes to acquiring skills, such as adult literacy programs, or other types of education. This paper...

Education, Health and Wages This paper develops and estimates a model with multiple schooling choices that identifies the causal effect of different levels of schooling on health, health-related behaviors, and labor market outcomes. We develop an approach that is a halfway house between a reduced form treatment effect model and a fully formulated dynamic discrete choice model. It is computation...

The Effect of Schooling on Cognitive Skills How schooling affects cognitive skills is a fundamental question for studies of human capital and labor markets. While scores on cognitive ability tests are positively associated with schooling, it has proven difficult to ascertain whether this relationship is causal. Moreover, the effect of schooling is difficult to separate from the confounding fact...

In this paper, we determine the role played by early cognitive, noncognitive, and health endowments. We identify the causal effect of education on health and health-related behaviors. We develop an empirical model of schooling choice and post-schooling outcomes, where both schooling and the outcomes determined in part by schooling are influenced by measured early family environments and latent ...
